We are progressing nicely into the school year. The children are falling into the daily routines and are beginning to feel a sense of accountability for the way the school day goes.

The month of October went swiftly and with great success! Our sharing sessions have been going well. The children have been very patient in waiting for their sharing day to come around. This activity helps develop public speaking skills and also gives the children an opportunity to build their vocabulary using descriptive language. Remember that storage is an issue, so please only send items that will fit in the children's cubbies.

I want to thank all the parents who took time out of their busy schedules to meet with me for parent/teacher conferences. They went well. Communication between parents and teachers is a vital part of a child's education. I encourage you to keep the flow of communications open with me.

We have a lot planned for the month of November. Our first unit or of the month will focus on Nocturnal Animals. We will explore the habits and habitats of nocturnal animals. Bats, raccoons, owls, armadillos, opossums, porcupines, and sloths are some of the nocturnal animals that we will investigate in this unit. In addition, we will discuss our own time change and how it will be getting darker earlier in the evening (i.e.: setting the clocks back).

Our second unit will focus on Community and Careers with in the Community. We will explore the following questions: What is a community? What are the parts of a community? What kind of community do we live in? Also, we will look at different jobs with in the community through the use of our "Community Helper Bag". Mail carrier, dentist, nurse, police officer, teacher, farmer, and baker are some of the careers we will investigate in this unit.

We will conclude November with a Thanksgiving unit. Thanksgiving is a festive meal of thanks and celebration that is shared with family and friends. We will further explore this concept using poems and rhymes such as "Five Little Turkeys". In addition, we will delve into the health aspect of Thanksgiving and discuss nutrition. As culminating activity we will grow a "Tree of Thankfulness." The children will generate a list of things they are thankful for which will be displayed on our tree.

Remember to keep the channels of communication open. Please speak to me if you have any questions or concerns. I have mapped out a stimulating month filled with activities, projects and moments of excitement! I hope you are as excited as I am.

Warmest regards,
Miss Jessica Shaloiko

I want to thank each of you who took the time to meet with me for Parent-Teacher conferences. Together we can provide the best 'First Steps' experience for you child!

Safety is a topic we discuss whenever a "teachable moment" presents itself throughout the school year. The visit by the firefighters helped us to know that even after putting on all the special fire safety gear, they are still a friend and helper. We enjoyed dressing up and pretending to be firefighters. We practiced how to get to our emergency meeting place here at First Steps. We will continue to practice fire safety drills every month. We also enjoyed the ambulance crew visit, and now we know what an ambulance looks like, inside and out! Friday, October 31st, sure was fun as we joined together in our costume parade around our First Steps neighborhood!

November is a month of less sun and colder days; but our school will be lit with the bright smiles of friends. We begin this month learning about nocturnal, or night creatures. How do they "see" in the dark anyway? We will also have lots of fun on Pajama Day - Thursday, November 16th.

We begin our discovery of careers by having some special visitors (hopefully you!) come in to tell us about what you do. If you would like to share time with us to talk about what you do, please let me know! We will also learn more about what it means to be a nurse, a police officer, a doctor, a librarian, work in a restaurant, office or store, or drive a truck for a service company!

Thanksgiving offers us opportunities to look at healthy food choices, traditions, sharing, being thankful, friendships and family. Our class will be filled with lots of yummy smells as we cook together (learning fun using our science, reading, and math skills) and get ready for our Thanksgiving Feast with all our First Steps friends on Tuesday, November 25th. We are thankful that you have chosen to share your wonderful children with us!
