We
are progressing nicely into the school year. The children are falling
into the daily routines and are beginning to feel a sense of accountability
for the way the school day goes.
The
month of October went swiftly and with great success! Our sharing
sessions have been going well. The children have been very patient
in waiting for their sharing day to come around. This activity helps
develop public speaking skills and also gives the children an opportunity
to build their vocabulary using descriptive language. Remember that
storage is an issue, so please only send items that will fit in
the children's cubbies.
I
want to thank all the parents who took time out of their busy schedules
to meet with me for parent/teacher conferences. They went well.
Communication between parents and teachers is a vital part of a
child's education. I encourage you to keep the flow of communications
open with me.
We
have a lot planned for the month of November. Our first unit or
of the month will focus on Nocturnal Animals. We will explore the
habits and habitats of nocturnal animals. Bats, raccoons, owls,
armadillos, opossums, porcupines, and sloths are some of the nocturnal
animals that we will investigate in this unit. In addition, we will
discuss our own time change and how it will be getting darker earlier
in the evening (i.e.: setting the clocks back).
Our
second unit will focus on Community and Careers with in the Community.
We will explore the following questions: What is a community? What
are the parts of a community? What kind of community do we live
in? Also, we will look at different jobs with in the community through
the use of our "Community Helper Bag". Mail carrier, dentist,
nurse, police officer, teacher, farmer, and baker are some of the
careers we will investigate in this unit.
We
will conclude November with a Thanksgiving unit. Thanksgiving is
a festive meal of thanks and celebration that is shared with family
and friends. We will further explore this concept using poems and
rhymes such as "Five Little Turkeys". In addition, we
will delve into the health aspect of Thanksgiving and discuss nutrition.
As culminating activity we will grow a "Tree of Thankfulness."
The children will generate a list of things they are thankful for
which will be displayed on our tree.
Remember
to keep the channels of communication open. Please speak to me if
you have any questions or concerns. I have mapped out a stimulating
month filled with activities, projects and moments of excitement!
I hope you are as excited as I am.
Warmest
regards,
Miss Jessica Shaloiko
